cheeky apple hat

In the school grounds there was an apples orchard which had, in the autumn, a glut of apples. The gardener would let you have as many apples as would fit in your hat, for a penny (yes, that’s 1d old money). The boys’ caps did not hold very many apples, but the girls’, especially when stretched a bit, would hold a lot more, as they were made of felt. The shape of my baggy hat reminds me of my old school beret, somewhat stretched, cheekily, to hold more apples. one of our GUEST DESIGNERS: Jennifer CLARK
