cheeky apple hat

In the school grounds there was an apples orchard which had, in the autumn, a glut of apples. The gardener would let you have as many apples as would fit in your hat, for a penny (yes, that’s 1d old money). The boys’ caps did not hold very many apples, but the girls’, especially when stretched a bit, would hold a lot more, as they were made of felt. The shape of my baggy hat reminds me of my old school beret, somewhat stretched, cheekily, to hold more apples.
